The Institute brings together national, state and local experts who have made expanding school breakfast a priority and provides a unique opportunity for selected state teams to engage in constructive conversation about how we can implement new and better ways to connect kids with school breakfast. State teams are comprised of stakeholders who can influence school breakfast practice and policy in their state, including gubernatorial staff, state education agency staff, state and local school nutrition directors, state and local superintendents, non-profit partners, school board members and education association representatives.
State teams receive a grant from No Kid Hungry to implement their action plans. State teams also receive ongoing technical assistance and support from No Kid Hungry around implementation, data analysis, policy and communications.
The request for proposals has closed for the second School Breakfast Leadership Institute. Proposals were due March 6, 2019. Participating state teams will receive a $50,000 grant to implement a comprehensive action plan to expand access to school breakfast within their state.

Teams from six states participated in the 2018 School Breakfast Leadership Institute— Hawaii, Kansas, Michigan, New York, North Carolina and South Carolina.
During the 1 ½-day Institute, attendees heard from national, state and local leaders who have made expanding access to school breakfast a top priority in their state during three panel sessions. Attendees also had an opportunity to engage in roundtable discussions around key topics like the Community Eligibility Provision, educator engagement, meal quality and Breakfast After the Bell implementation.
State teams had dedicated “team time” to work with their No Kid Hungry facilitator to establish a goal, develop key strategies and identify tactics to expand access to school breakfast in their state.
