Tennessee CACFP Week 2023

Afterschool meals/snacks (CACFP or NSLP) are a great way to help fuel students after the school day has ended. The information presented will help schools and community-based organizations consider serving afterschool meals/snacks. There are many ways in which these programs can be administered, and we hope to share some great examples from right here in Tennessee.

In this video, learn how CACFP and NSLP compare to one another and hear it from our experts from Tennessee Department of Human Services and Tennessee Department of Education. You will also hear the considerations and opportunities of each program option.
In this video, we are going to explore what it means for a school nutrition department to not only serve breakfast and lunch but to also take on being the CACFP At-Risk After School meal sponsor in their schools and community. Our guest expert, Jennifer Burleson of Bristol City Schools will share why they made the transition from being a NSLP snack sponsor to being a CACFP meal sponsor and some things to consider when making the change.
In this video, you will hear about how a community-based organization acts as an Administrative Sponsor to one of the school systems here in Tennessee by handling the paperwork and administrative side of the operation, while the school nutrition department acts as the vendor to provide the meals to the students in afterschool programs. You will hear from Veronica Stephens with the East Tennessee Human Resource Agency (ETHRA) and Megan Adams with Roane County Schools.
In this video, you are going to hear how a school nutrition department and a community-based organization tag-team to offer both a snack and supper meal to students in the afterschool program in Haywood County schools. This is just one more example of how schools and community-based organizations can work together to feed more kids at the end of the school day. You will hear from Denita Baxter with Haywood county schools and Amie Croom with Southwest Human Resource Agency (SWHRA) on how their partnership works.
As we wrap up, we will take some time to summarize the options discussed and provide a list of resources and ways that No Kid Hungry can offer support to ensure students have access to meals and snacks after school.
